Eating on a Budget

Updated: Mar 10, 2022

For the month of March the nail hit the head where I had to significantly reduce our food budget. It was a challenge to do but so far I’m in the end of week two and it’s not going too bad.

We normally spend just under £1k a month on food for our family (it may be quite a lot for some but this includes food for my work/recipe testing) and this month we reduced it to £645 due to a number of reasons!

I’ve had to adapt to recipe planning the week before, doing more online shopping and being conscious of the food brands I am buying - including trying to keep everything organic where possible. So are you looking to budget more wisely with feeding the family? I’ve come up with some tips.

Meal Prep

If the kids have pack lunches for the week, why not make your own. Big batches of salads, healthy treats, snacks that can be made in a batch on the weekend and last for a few days.

Plan the week before

write down what you will be making next week. PLAN AHEAD! Also if you want a takeout treat, or sneaky coffee trip that week, put aside some money from your budget. Be realistic. We need rewards.

Go Online and Find a local grocer

there’s so much online to get your shopping done you can see how much your paying for your shop , not like when your wondering around the aisles and it all tallies up. Better still if you have a local grocer you can support, there are some gems you can find and great deals. I love my local they have plantains, okra and coconuts. You can’t find them in the supermarket that often!

Divide your budget into weekly spends

break down the week into lunches, breakfast, dinner and snacks. Plus a little extra for last minute treats!

Be original, show off your style, and tell your story.
